Each child in attendance receives a  packet  of  information  to  take home  that  contains a worksheet with  questions to  answer  on the
things they learned that day.  The worksheet is based on the Girl Scout requirements for the “Horse Lover’s Badge.”  In addition, participants receive copies of some of the information gone over that day as well as materials provided by national breed associations such as the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) and the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) and popular nationally known horse trainer John Lyons.
Each participant receives a basic riding lesson and has the chance to practice the skills learned in either the indoor or outdoor arena, depending on the weather.  Riders take turns riding during this hour on the number of horses determined in advance, up to five for safety reasons.  Generally, there is one staff member per horse to provide assistance.  Riders learn how to get their horses to move forward, stop and steer.  Those who have riding experience receive more advanced instruction and are permitted to ride at a faster pace.
All riders are required to wear helmets when riding.  Groups are asked to bring bike helmets, which will be checked to make sure they provide adequate protection.  ASTM-approved riding helmets are available for those who need them.

In addition, riders are asked to wear long pants and shoes or boots with a little heel.  Tennis shoes and shoes with big, thick soles are discouraged.  For cold weather riding, all participants are advised to dress warmly and wear gloves.  Even though much of the activity takes place in the barn and indoor riding arena, this is still considered an outdoor activity.

All riders under the age of 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
